In October, 2023, the Newark Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit began an investigation into the sale of drugs on East Main Street by a male. During the course of the investigation, officers gathered information on the identity of the male and observed numerous drug transactions.
The male was identified as Michael Gordon Somers, 40, of Elkton.
On February 23, 2024, the Newark Police Department conducted a traffic stop of Gordon Somers’ vehicle and took him into custody without incident. A subsequent search warrant executed on his vehicle yielded more than 23 grams of cocaine, along with materials used to package drugs for sale.
Gordon Somers was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with:
Gordon Somers appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was released on his own recognizance.

Due to work on the CSX railroad tracks, North College Avenue will be CLOSED between East Cleveland Avenue and West Main Street. Vehicular access will be permitted to driveways on each side of the railroad tracks. The full vehicular detour route can be found here.
This will be a full closure (24 hours/day) beginning Monday March 4 at 5:00 am until Friday March 8 at 10:00 pm. The closure schedule is subject to change based upon weather.
Pedestrians WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CROSS THE RAILROAD TRACKS. Pedestrians must cross the tracks at a marked crossing (New London Avenue) or at North Chapel Street. The full pedestrian detour route can be found here.
Trains will continue to run during this closure. As a reminder, both City and State law prohibit crossing railroad tracks at any location other than at a marked crossing.
