On July 8, 2019, at about 0736 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to a crash with injuries at the intersection of Library Avenue (DE State Route 72) and Wyoming Road. Responding officers conducted an investigation at the scene. Officers determined that a 2005 Mack dump truck was traveling southbound on Library Avenue approaching Wyoming Road. At the same time, a 2012 Jeep Patriot was traveling northbound on Library Avenue in the left turn lane to westbound Wyoming Road. Both vehicles had solid green lights. The Jeep turned left in front of the dump truck and the Jeep was struck on the passenger side while in the intersection.
As a result of the crash, the operator of the Jeep, Michael Gazo, 76, of Newark, sustained unspecified injuries that were not initially believed to be life-threatening. He was admitted to an area hospital at that time. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured.
On July 16, 2019, Newark Police were notified that Gazo, who was still admitted to the hospital, succumbed to the injuries received as a result of the crash.
No prosecution is anticipated in this case.
