Newark Police to Host 14th Citizens’ Police Academy

The Newark Police Department will be hosting its 14th Citizens’ Police Academy starting on Wednesday October 9, 2019.  The Academy will run every Wednesday night from 6:00 pm through 9:00 pm until November 20, 2019.

The program is designed to give citizens who are interested in learning about law enforcement a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the various duties and responsibilities of a police officer.  Anyone over the age of 18 may apply and there is no cost to attend the program.  Preference is given to City of Newark residents, but City residency is not required.

The program will offer a variety of instruction to the attendees, including classroom lecture, first-hand participation and role-playing. The program curriculum highlights include:

  • Crime Scene Investigation and Processing
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) investigation procedures
  • Firearms (including shooting at the range)
  • K-9 demonstration
  • Patrol procedures
  • Police Culture
  • Ride-Along
  • Special Investigations Unit
  • SWAT
  • Traffic Enforcement – RADAR & LIDAR
  • Use of Force

Citizens interested in applying for the program can apply online by going to the Citizens’ Police Academy page at newarkde.gov/police.  Applicants may also obtain a paper application from the Newark Police Records Department during normal business hours.
