3 firearms recovered from traffic stops in less than 33 hours

Beginning on Saturday May 9, 2026, at approximately 4:21 AM to Sunday May 10, 2026, at approximately 1:01 PM members of the Newark Police Department’s Patrol Division recovered 3 (three) firearms following traffic stops.

On Saturday May 9, 2026, at approximately 4:21 AM, members of the Newark Police Department’s Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of East Main Street and Academy Street. Officers had observed the vehicle traveling the wrong way on East Main Street and initiated the traffic stop. The vehicle’s sole occupant was the driver, identified as Sean BOSWELL, 29, of Medford, NJ. During the subsequent investigation into Driving Under the Influence, it was discovered that BOSWELL had a loaded 9mm handgun concealed, within reach, in the driver’s door pocket of the vehicle. The investigation revealed that BOSWELL did not possess a valid concealed carry permit. BOSWELL was subsequently arrested for the following charges:

Driving a Vehicle under the Influence of Alcohol – 1 count

Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon – Felony -1 count

Possession of a Firearm while under the influence – Misdemeanor – 1 count

3 (three) additional traffic offenses

Prior to his arraignment, BOSWELL was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility on an Intoxication Hold.

On Sunday May 10, 2026, at approximately 1:26 AM a Newark Police Department Sergeant assigned to the Patrol Division was on patrol in the area of Elkton Road and O’Daniel Avenue. The Sergeant observed a vehicle pulled to the side of the road and an individual later identified as David WILLIS, 43, of Marcus Hook, PA, standing outside of the car urinating in full view of the passing public. The Sergeant and assisting units contacted WILLIS, and during the investigation discovered that WILLIS was intoxicated and had been operating the vehicle under the influence of alcoholic beverages before stopping to urinate. During the investigation, officers discovered that WILLIS had concealed a loaded 9 mm handgun beneath the driver’s seat of the vehicle. The investigation revealed that WILLIS did not possess a valid concealed carry permit. WILLIS was subsequently arrested for the following charges:

Disorderly Conduct – Creating a Hazardous or Physical Offense Condition – Misdemeanor -1 count

Disorderly Conduct – Creasing a Hazardous Condition – Misdemeanor -1 count

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol – 1 count

Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon – Felony – 1 count

Possession of a Firearm while under the influence – Misdemeanor- 1 count

Prior to his arraignment, WILLIS was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility on an Intoxication Hold.

On Sunday May 10, 2026, at approximately 1:01 PM, an officer assigned to the Newark Police Department’s Patrol Division observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on East Delaware Avenue, against the flow of traffic. The officer observed that the vehicle also did not display a valid license plate. The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver, Andrew HARRIS, 21, of Orlando, Florida. During the traffic stop, the officer discovered that the vehicle was unregistered, Harris did not possess his driver’s license, and HARRIS was unable to provide proof of insurance for the vehicle. Prior to the vehicle being towed from the scene of the stop, a loaded 9 mm handgun was discovered next to the driver’s seat, in the center console of the vehicle. Additionally, the officers discovered multiple 9 mm bullets in driver’s door pocket. The investigation revealed that HARRIS did not possess a valid concealed carry permit. HARRIS was subsequently arrested for the following charges:

Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon – Felony – 1 count

4 (four) traffic offenses

HARRIS was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court #11. HARRIS was released on $3200.00 unsecured bond and ordered to relinquish all firearms to the Newark Police Department.
