Fatal Crash Involving Bicyclist on South College Avenue

On September 29, 2023, at about 0249 hours, Newark Police responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of South College Avenue and East Delaware Avenue.

The initial investigation determined that a 2013 Toyota Sienna was traveling eastbound on West Delaware Avenue approaching South College Avenue. A bicyclist was northbound on South College Avenue approaching the intersection with West Delaware Avenue.  The Toyota struck the bicyclist in the intersection.  The bicyclist was ejected from the bicycle and landed on the north side of East Delaware Avenue.  The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The traffic light at the intersection was functioning and displayed a green light for eastbound traffic on West Delaware Avenue and a red light for traffic on South College Avenue.

The 24 year-old driver of the Toyota remained at the scene.  Neither speed nor impairment on the part of the Toyota driver are factors in this crash.

The identity of the bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The roadways were closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated.
