Wilmington Man Charged With Drug Offenses Following Pursuit

On September 15, 2023, at about 0858 hours, a Newark police officer patrolling Capitol Trail (SR 2) attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic offense.  The vehicle did not initially stop and pulled into a parking lot in an attempt to evade the officer.  When the vehicle reached an impasse in the parking lot, the driver fled the vehicle on foot.

The officer pursued the suspect on foot.  A bystander who observed the foot pursuit assisted the officer by pushing the suspect to the ground as the suspect came towards him.  The officer then took the suspect into custody without further incident.

During the arrest of the suspect, suspected heroin and/or fentanyl, along with crack cocaine, were located near the suspect after he attempted to discard them.

When the suspect fled his vehicle, he left the vehicle in drive.  The vehicle rolled and struck another vehicle in the parking lot causing minor damage.

Although the suspect initially provided a false name to police, he was later identified as Rey Sanchez, 28, of Wilmington.

Sanchez was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with:

  • Possession with Intent to Deliver Heroin
  • Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine
  • Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash
  • Additional traffic offenses

Sanchez appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $83,500 cash bail.  Sanchez was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
