On December 30, 2018, at 1025 hours, Newark Police responded to South College Avenue and Welsh Tract Road for a crash involving multiple injuries.
During the investigation, officers determined that a 2015 Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound on South College Avenue intending to turn left onto Welsh Tract Road. A 1993 GMC pick-up truck was traveling southbound on South College Avenue in the left straight lane. The Hyundai turned left in front of the GMC and the GMC struck the passenger side of the Hyundai.
The female passenger in the Hyundai sustained serious injuries and was trapped in the vehicle. She was extricated by Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company of Newark, treated by New Castle County Paramedics and was flown by Delaware State Police helicopter to an area trauma center for treatment. The male driver of the Hyundai, as well as the two occupants of the GMC, were all transported to area hospitals for injuries not believed to be life threatening.
The driver of the Hyundai, an 85 year-old male from Essex, CT, was issued a summons for Failure to Yield on a Left Turn. Southbound South College Avenue and part of Welsh Tract Road were closed for about two hours while police investigated and cleared the scene.
