Newark Man Arrested for Drug Possession; Officer Injured During Arrest

On November 21, 2018, Newark Police Officers arrested Alexander Aguilar, of Newark,  and charged him with a number of offenses after he was observed preparing to use heroin in his vehicle.

At about 1648 hours, a plainclothes officer, who is assigned to the Street Crimes Unit, observed a vehicle pull into the Park ‘n Shop Shopping Center located at 245 South Main Street.  The officer observed the subject preparing to ingest heroin.

The officer identified himself to Aguilar and Aguilar began to reverse the vehicle from its parking spot.  Aguilar was unable to back-up and began to drive forward, at which time the officer opened the driver’s side door of the vehicle.  The officer continued to identify himself as a police officer to Aguilar.  Aguilar continued to ignore the officer and drove away, causing a laceration to the officer’s hand as the vehicle pulled away.

The officer radioed for assistance and Aguilar was stopped by uniformed Newark officers a short distance away.  Aguilar, 21, was taken into custody without further incident.

During a search of the vehicle following his arrest, officers located a fixed blade knife and a bundle of heroin.

Aguilar was charged with the following offenses:
Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
Resisting Arrest
Vehicular Assault – Third Degree
Possession of Heroin
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Disregarding a Traffic Control Device
Driving Without Headlights

Aguilar appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #02 and was released on $4,002 unsecured bond to appear in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas at a later date.

The officer did not require medical attention for his laceration.
