Over the past 3 weeks, members of the Newark Police Street Crimes Unit have arrested three people in separate drug investigations:
March 22, 2022 – After an investigation into Duane Grimes, 25, of Newark, officers executed a search warrant at Grimes’ residence on Broadleaf Drive. During the search, officers seized more than 30 grams of cocaine packaged for sale. Grimes was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Possession With Intent To Deliver Cocaine In A Tier 3 Quantity and Possession of Cocaine in a Tier 3 Quantity. He appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was released on his own recognizance.

March 31, 2022 – After an investigation into Nasir Bush, 24, of Newark, officers executed a search warrant at Bush’s residence in the unit block of Elan Hall. During the search, officers seized more than 80 grams of marijuana packaged for sale. In addition, officers seized a 9mm handgun. Bush was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Possession With Intent To Deliver Marijuana and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Bush appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $22,500 cash bail. Bush was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

April 8, 2022 – After an investigation into <REDACTED> of Newark, officers executed a search warrant at <REDACTED> residence in the 100-block of East Main Street. During the search, officers seized more than six pounds of marijuana, along with smaller amounts of both MDMA and Ketamine. <REDACTED> was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Possession With Intent To Deliver Marijuana in a Tier 2 Quantity, Possession of MDMA in a Tier 1 Quantity and Possession of Ketamine. <REDACTED> appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $17, 250 secured bail. <REDACTED> was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
On April 2, 2022, the Newark Police Department was re-accredited for the ninth time by the Commission on Accreditation For Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Once again, the Newark Police Department was given Meritorious designation. CALEA certification demonstrates that the Newark Police Department is in compliance with more than 400 standards for law enforcement agencies.
The re-accreditation process involved a 3-day review of the Newark Police Department’s policies and practices by an assessment team appointed by CALEA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this assessment was conducted remotely. In addition, the assessors spoke with agency employees and members of the public were offered the opportunity to provide both written and verbal feedback about the agency and its practices.
On April 2, 2022, Deputy Chiefs Mark Farrall and Kevin Feeney, along with Accreditation Manager Cpl. Brandon Walker and PSAP Manager Brian Cannon, traveled to CALEA’s conference in Orlando, FL to answer questions posed by CALEA commissioners about the agency.
For the first time, the Newark Police Department’s Communications Center, which receives 911 calls in the City of Newark, sought and received communications accreditation. The Communications Center was required to meet nearly 200 standards for police communications centers.
