The Newark Police Department is actively investigating a motor vehicle crash that occurred in the early morning hours of January 13, 2025, during which a vehicle struck the St. John AM Church located at the corner of New London Road and Hillside Road.
At approximately 4:15 AM, officers responded to a car dealership in the 300 block of East Cleveland Avenue following reports of trespassing and suspicious activity involving a black sedan and individuals on foot. Upon arrival, officers began checking the area for the vehicle and subjects.
A black sedan was observed pulling out of the dealership onto East Cleveland Avenue. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the vehicle continued to flee westbound with officers discontinuing attempts to stop it. Officers responded back to the dealership, and checked the area for the suspect vehicle.
Subsequently, officers discovered that the vehicle had crashed into St. John AM Church. Two occupants were found at the scene with injuries. Officers immediately rendered aid, and both individuals were transported to a local hospital where they were both admitted in stable condition. A check of law enforcement databases was conducted and the vehicle was discovered to have been reported as stolen in Pennsylvania.
The Newark Police Department’s Traffic Response Unit responded to investigate the crash. Church staff and representatives from the City of Newark Building Department were notified and arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
