Newark Police Announce 16th Citizens’ Police Academy

The Newark Police Department is proud to announce we are accepting applications for our 16th Citizens’ Police Academy.  The academy will begin on Wednesday September 11, 2024 and will run every Wednesday night from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm through November 20, 2024.  All class sessions will be held at the Newark Municipal Building located at 220 South Main Street and one session will be held at the police firearms range.

The program is designed to give those interested in learning about law enforcement a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the various duties and responsibilities of a police officer.  Anyone 18 or older may apply and there is no cost to attend the program.  Preference is given to City of Newark residents, but City residency is not required.

The program will introduce the attendees to various functions of the police department via classroom lecture, first-hand participation and role-playing. The program curriculum highlights include:

  • Communications Division (including 911)
  • Community Engagement Unit
  • Crime scene investigation and processing
  • Criminal investigations
  • Crisis negotiations
  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) investigation procedures
  • Firearms (including shooting at the range)
  • K-9 demonstration
  • Patrol procedures
  • Police culture
  • Ride-along
  • SWAT
  • Traffic enforcement – RADAR & LIDAR
  • Use of force and de-escalation
  • Victim services
