Two Men Charged Following Commercial Robbery

On June 25, 2024, at about 1036 hours, Newark Police responded to a T-Mobile store located in the Newark Shopping Center, 230 East Main Street, for a report of a robbery.  Responding officers determined that two male suspects entered the store wearing masks and ordered the three employees into a back room.  One of the suspects displayed a handgun.  The suspects then proceeded to steal a large amount of electronic devices from the store, along with personal property belonging to the victims, before fleeing the store.

Using surveillance cameras, witness statements and tracking data from the electronic devices, the suspects were tracked to New Castle.  Once there, with the assistance of the New Castle County Police, officers stopped a vehicle with two occupants.  Both occupants matched the descriptions of the suspects in this incident and were taken into custody without incident.

The suspects were identified as Kyle Byers (vehicle driver), 32, of Wilmington and Durell Dupree (vehicle passenger), 40, of New Castle.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, property stolen during this incident was recovered.

Both suspects were transported to Newark Police headquarters where they were charged with:

  • Robbery First Degree (3 counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (2 counts)
  • Kidnapping Second Degree (3 counts)
  • Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony
  • Conspiracy Second Degree

Both suspects appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and were ordered to be held in default of $318,000 cash bail.  They were turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
