On April 5, 2023, Newark Police School Resource Officers (“SRO”) received a report from the administration at Newark Charter High School, 200 McIntire Drive, of a possible threat towards the school. Newark Police SROs immediately began to investigate the threat.
The investigation determined that a school staff member was speaking with a student, a 16 year-old male, at the school. The student threatened to commit a violent act at the school against other students. The staff member immediately reported the threat to school administration, who promptly called Newark Police.
The student was taken into custody by Newark Police at the school and is in custody while undergoing a mental health evaluation. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging the juvenile with four counts of Terroristic Threatening. Upon completion of the mental health evaluation, the student will appear before a magistrate to be formally charged with the offenses.
