Newark Man Charged With Multiple Counts of Burglary

On January 11, 2023, Newark Police responded to a residence in the unit block of Annabelle Street for a report of a theft from a vehicle.  The victim reported that the locked vehicle was entered and personal items, including a credit card, were stolen from within.  The vehicle was damaged during entry.  The investigating officer found that there was an attempt to use the credit card online to order merchandise to a residence in the 300-block of Paper Mill Road.

On January 12, 2023, Newark Police responded to two reports of thefts from vehicles in the 300-block of Paper Mill Road.  During these incidents, unlocked vehicles were entered and personal property was taken.  In addition, a backyard shed for one of the residences was entered and property was removed.

A search warrant was executed at the residence where the online purchase attempt was made.  Property stolen during these incidents was located.  The resident was identified as Stephen Evans, 28.

Evans was taken into custody without incident.  He was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with:

  • Burglary Third Degree (4 counts)
  • Theft Over $1,500
  • Theft Under $1,500 (3 counts)
  • Unlawful Use of a Payment Card
  • Receiving Stolen Property
  • Criminal Mischief

Evans appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $15,500 secured bail. Evans was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
