On Thursday, February 10th, members of the Newark Police Special Enforcement Division, which includes both the Traffic and Special Operations Units, conducted a one-day directed enforcement detail targeting distracted driving. The areas targeted included South College Avenue near the Newark train station and South Main Street near West Main Street.
The detail lasted approximately 6.5 hours. During that time, officers issued 107 citations, mostly for use of a cell phone while driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. In addition to these violations, citations were also issued for these offenses:
The Newark Police will continue to enforce traffic laws to reduce crashes, a majority of which are caused by distracted driving and other inattentive driving behavior.
