After having to cancel last year’s Citizens’ Police Academy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Newark Police Department is proud to announce the 15th Citizens’ Police Academy. The academy will start on Thursday September 23, 2021 and will run every Thursday night from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm through November 11, 2021. All class sessions will be held at the Newark Municipal Building located at 220 South Main Street and one session will be held at the police firearms range.
The program is designed to give citizens who are interested in learning about law enforcement a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the various duties and responsibilities of a police officer. Anyone 18 or older may apply and there is no cost to attend the program. Preference is given to City of Newark residents, but City residency is not required.
The program will offer a variety of instruction to the attendees, including classroom lecture, first-hand participation and role-playing. The program curriculum highlights include:
Citizens interested in applying for the program can apply online by going to the Citizens’ Police Academy page at newarkde.gov/police. Applicants may also obtain a paper application from the Newark Police Records Department during normal business hours.
