UPDATE – Results – Newark Police to Conduct Distracted Driving Enforcement

On Thursday, March 25th, members of the Newark Police Special Enforcement Division, which includes both the Traffic and Special Operations Units, conducted a one-day directed enforcement detail targeting distracted driving. The areas targeted included, among other areas, the construction site on Elkton Road between Christina Parkway and Otts Chapel Road.

The detail lasted approximately 6 hours.  During that time, officers issued 140 citations, mostly for use of a cell phone while driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. In addition to these violations, citations were also issued for these offenses:

  • Driving While Suspended
  • Disregarding a Red Light
  • Failure to Yield
  • Driving over the Median
  • Registration Violations
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Blocking an Intersection

The Newark Police will continue to enforce traffic laws to reduce crashes, a majority of which are caused by distracted driving and other inattentive driving behaviors.
