Weekly Crime Report – 08/21/19

The following are cases of interest handled by the Newark Police Department between August 10th and August 20th, 2019:

Burglary:

On August 18th between 1145 and 1556 hours in the 100-block of Woodlawn Avenue – Unknown suspect(s) entered the residence by breaking a rear door and removed property from within the residence.  No one was home at the time of the burglary.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle:

On August 10 between 0054 and 0100 hours on Rockwood Court – A white male suspect, wearing a long sleeve shirt and gloves, entered two vehicles and removed property, including a firearm, from within the vehicles.

Between August 17 at 2230 hours and August 18 at 1100 hours in the 1200-block of Wharton Drive – Unknown suspect(s) entered three vehicles, rummaged through them and removed property from one of the vehicles.  No vehicles were damaged and at least one was not locked at the time.

Theft:

On July 24th, at about 1923 hours, a victim’s wallet fell off the counter near the register at the Wawa at 601 Ogletown Road.  The victim did not realize this right away and returned a short time later to find the wallet missing. Surveillance video shows a black male wearing a backwards baseball cap, possibly leather, removing the wallet.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Cpl. M. Notable Arrests:

On August 10th, at about 0017 hours, officers stopped a vehicle on Bellevue Road after it was observed committing several traffic violations.  Upon contact with the vehicle, officers smelled the odor of marijuana and observed marijuana in the vehicle.  The officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located a loaded handgun along with a small amount of marijuana.  Officers arrested the driver of the vehicle Brandon Norman, 27 of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania.  He was charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of Marijuana and various traffic offenses.  He appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 in New Castle and was released on $70,000 unsecured bail.

On August 16th, at about 2357 hours, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on South College Avenue.  The officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and conducted a search of the vehicle.  A search of the vehicle revealed quantities of heroin and crack cocaine that were packaged for sale.  The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jamar Merritt, 18, of Elkton, Maryland.  Merritt was taken into custody and charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver heroin, Possession with Intent to Deliver crack cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Merritt appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 in New Castle and was released on his own recognizance.
