On May 2, 2019, at about 1245 hours, a smoke device was released in the cafeteria of Newark Charter High School located at 200 McIntire Drive in Newark. At the time, the cafeteria contained approximately 400 students. The device caused a large smoke cloud in the cafeteria. As a result, the cafeteria was evacuated by school staff, who also located the device that caused the smoke. School staff immediately alerted Newark Police and the Newark Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) investigated the incident.
The SRO spoke with school staff and reviewed video surveillance of the incident. Based upon the video review and other investigation by the SRO, Logan Jones, 18, of Newark, was identified as the suspect who set-off the smoke device.
On May 3, 2019, Jones was taken into custody by the SRO and charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct. He was released on his own recognizance to appear in court at a later date. No injuries occurred during the incident.
No photo of Jones is available at the time of this release. Any information as to Jones’ status with Newark Charter High School should be directed to school administrators.
