Wilmington Man Charged With Gun and Drug Offenses Following Traffic Stop

On March 9, 2019, at 1307 hours, a Newark Police Officer stopped a vehicle for a registration violation at the intersection of Hillside Road and West Main Street.  Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.  The officer searched the vehicle and located marijuana in the center console of the vehicle.  The driver of the vehicle, Keith Johnson, 29, of Wilmington, was taken into custody without incident.

During a search of Johnson following the arrest, the officer located a concealed handgun in Johnson’s jacket pocket.

More than 80 grams of marijuana, packaged in smaller bags, was located during the search.

Johnson was transported to Newark Police Headquarters where he was charged with the following offenses:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver Marijuana
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited
  • Driving While Suspended

Johnson appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 in New Castle and was released on his own recognizance.
