Fatal Crash Involving a Pedestrian

On February 6, 2019, at 1957 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to Woodlawn Avenue, east of Capitol Trail, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.  Responding officers found a male pedestrian in the roadway suffering from serious injuries.  The pedestrian was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company.  The male pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.  The identity of the pedestrian is yet to be confirmed.

The Newark Police Department Traffic Unit responded to investigate the crash.  The preliminary investigation found that a 2008 Chrysler Sebring, operated by a 51 year-old male, was traveling westbound on Woodlawn Avenue and struck the pedestrian, who was in the middle of the roadway.  After the pedestrian was struck, the pedestrian was then struck a second time by a 2009 Kia Spectra, operated by a 58 year-old female.  The Kia was traveling eastbound on Woodlawn Avenue.  Both vehicles and operators remained at the scene following the crash.  Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

The operator of the Chrysler was also transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Woodlawn Avenue, between Capitol Trail and Poplar Avenue, was closed for about three hours while police investigated and cleared the crash.
