Traffic Alert – Memorial Day Parade

The Newark Memorial Day Parade is this Sunday May 19. The parade route will close Delaware Ave between South Main Street and South Chapel Street. The entire length of East Main Street will be closed between Library Ave and South College Ave. South College Ave will be closed north of Park Place except for local traffic.

Road closures are expected to be implemented around 12:30 pm and will extend until about 5:00 pm.

HEAVY TRAFFIC IS EXPECTED ON SURROUNDING STREETS DUE TO THE DETOURS. Use an alternate route and expect delays.

Newark Man Charged With Aggravated Menacing and Related Offenses

On May 7, 2024, at about 2303 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to the 100-block of West Main Street for a report of a male pointing a firearm at a female.  The suspect fled in a vehicle before Newark Police arrival.

An investigation determined that a female was walking along West Main Street when a male exited a vehicle wearing a mask.  The male approached the female while pointing what she believed to be a firearm at her.  The victim began to scream and ran from the scene.  The male suspect fled in the vehicle.

Newark Police detectives investigated the incident and quickly identified the suspect vehicle using cameras in the area.

The suspect was identified as Mykai Thomas, 22, of Newark.

On May 9, 2024, detectives executed a search warrant on Thomas’ vehicle and located a firearm.

On May 10, 2024, Thomas turned himself in to Newark Police.  Thomas was charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Aggravated Menacing
  • Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony

He appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $14,000 secured bail.  Thomas was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
