Traffic Alert – Winterfest and Reindeer Run & Romp Road Closures

On Friday, December 6, 2024, the City of Newark’s Winterfest and Special Olympics Delaware Reindeer Run & Romp will take place on Academy Street, south of the intersection with East Main Street. Academy Street will be closed between East Main Street and East Delaware Avenue starting at 4:00 PM and will not reopen until after 9:00 PM. Traffic will be heavier than usual traffic in the area, so please find an alternate route if possible. Motorists may experience intermittent stoppages at some intersections in the area of South Chapel Street, East Park Place and Academy Street from East Main Street to the James F. Hall Trail to allow runners & walkers to safely pass through the intersections. As always please drive safely and utilize caution while traveling through the area.

Shots fired and weapons investigation arrest

On November 24, 2024, the Newark Police Department began investigating a reported shots fired and weapons offense incident that had occurred at a local hotel. The investigation by detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit revealed that a small gathering had taken place in a hotel room during the overnight hours into November 24, 2024. During the gathering, a dispute ensued, during which Trent WING, 35, of Newark, Delaware, produced a firearm and pointed it at a victim. A second victim confronted WING and fought with WING for control of the firearm. During this confrontation the firearm discharged striking and damaging a door to the hotel room. No one was struck by or injured by the gunfire. After the firearm discharged, WING fled the area, while still in possession of the firearm.

On November 25, 2024, members of the Newark Police Department SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, and Criminal Investigations Unit responded to WING’s residence to arrest WING on charges related to this investigation. WING was taken into custody without incident.

WING was later arraigned via videophone before the Justice of Peace Court #2. WING was order committed to the Department of Corrections in lieu of $120,100.00 cash bond on the below listed charges:

Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony – 2 counts

Carry a Concealed Deadly Weapon – A Firearm – 1 count

Aggravated Menacing – 1 count

Reckless Endangering 1st Degree – 1 count

Criminal Mischief under $1000 – 1 count
