On January 17, 2019, Sergeants Truman Bolden and Greg Micolucci formally graduated from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Command and Leadership Academy.  They completed the class during the fall of 2018 and were recognized at the 53rd graduation ceremony yesterday in East Windsor, New Jersey.  The classes were held weekly in New Castle County in conjunction with the New Castle County Police Department.

During this 14 week class, students learn leadership skills, behavioral theories, stress management, communication skills and how to manage groups and inter-group conflict.  The curriculum, which was developed through the United States Military Academy at West Point, teaches the students how to use organization theory in a law enforcement context.  The class meets weekly and requires extensive preparation and written testing.

All sworn officers with the Newark Police Department at the rank of Sergeant and above are required to attend the class.  Management employees in a supervisory capacity also attend the class.  Sgt. Greg D’Elia, a graduate of the course himself, now serves as an instructor.

On January 17, 2019, at 0358 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to the Exxon station at 820 South College Avenue for a report of a robbery.  The male clerk advised that a white male suspect entered the business and displayed a large knife to the employee while demanding money.  The clerk gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of United States currency and the suspect fled on foot onto Plymouth Drive.  The clerk was not injured during this incident.

A Newark Police canine unit responded to the scene and was not able to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5’9″, thin build and wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.  The suspect was armed with a large kitchen knife.
