On April 22, 2020, a residential burglary was reported in the 100-block of West Main Street.  The victim reported that between April 21st at 2030 hours and April 22nd at 0830 hours, unknown suspect(s) entered the residence and removed property from within.

The victim reported that there was no apparent forced entry into the residence and entry may have been gained through an unsecured window.

There was no damage caused during the incident.

The Newark Police Department is a member of the Neighbors by Ring App.  This app allows the Newark Police to inform the community of real-time crime and safety events so the public can always stay informed.  The Neighbors by Ring App also allows the user to share information, including footage from the user’s camera system, directly with Newark Police. On April 10, 2020, at about 1518 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to the TD Bank in the 200 block of East Delaware Avenue for a report of a male attempting to deposit fraudulent checks.  Arriving officers located the suspect in the drive thru lane of the bank and contacted him.  He was taken into custody without incident.

An investigation revealed that the suspect, Khalil Davis, 22, of Philadelphia, PA, attempted to deposit a fraudulent check into two separate accounts in a different person’s name.  The suspect endorsed the checks in the fraudulent name.  The investigation further revealed that the same suspect previously deposited additional fraudulent checks in different names on both March 11, 2020 and March 27, 2020 at the same bank.

Once Davis’ true identity was determined, it was confirmed that he was a Pennsylvania resident and traveled to Delaware to engage in this fraudulent transaction.  This act of traveling to Delaware for a non-permitted purpose violates the current state of emergency order in Delaware.

Davis was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with the following offenses:

• Identity Theft (3 counts)
• Attempted Theft over $1,500
• Forgery Second Degree (3 counts)
• Failure to Obey an Emergency Order (state of emergency)

Davis appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was released on his own recognizance.
