UPDATE – Criminal Investigation in Fairfield Shopping Center

On June 12, 2023, at about 1240 hours, a phone call was received by the Food Lion store located at 401 New London Road.  The caller made statements referring to a possible explosive in the building.  Management of the store evacuated the building and notified Newark Police.

Responding officers closed off the parking lot around the business while explosive detection dogs responded to the scene.  Explosive detection dogs from Newark Police, University of Delaware Police, Delaware State Police and Delaware Natural Resources Police checked the building and did not locate any explosive devices.  The parking lot was re-opened about 90 minutes after the call and management of the Food Lion re-opened the store shortly thereafter.

Criminal Investigation in Fairfield Shopping Center

The Newark Police Department is currently conducting a criminal investigation in the Fairfield Shopping Center on New London Road.  As a result, a portion of the shopping center and parking lot are currently closed.  The public is asked to avoid the area at this time.

Area residences are not currently affected.
