Traffic Alert – Closure of Interstate 95

The ongoing construction on Interstate 95 at SR 896 will require the COMPLETE CLOSURE of Interstate 95 at SR 896, in BOTH DIRECTIONS, next week.  Traffic from I-95 will be DETOURED THROUGH NEWARK during the closure.  Very heavy traffic is expected on Elkton Road, Christina Parkway (SR 4) and South College Avenue (SR 896) during the closures. Plan accordingly and expect delays.  Police officers will be stationed along the detour route to help facilitate the flow of traffic.

The following is the closure schedule, which is weather dependent (times subject to change):

  • Tuesday February 13: 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • Wednesday February 14: 10:00 pm – 5:00 am
  • Thursday February 15: 10:00 pm – 5:00 am
  • Monday February 19: 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

Philadelphia Man Charged With Robbery

On January 30, 2024, at about 1144 hours, Newark Police responded to Park and Shop Liquors, 245 South Main Street, for a report of a robbery.  Responding officers contacted the male clerk.  The clerk advised that a male subject entered the business and confronted the clerk while raising his fist.  The suspect demanded property from the victim.  A scuffle between the clerk and the suspect ensued, during which time they exited the store.  The clerk locked himself back in the store and the suspect fled with personal property belonging to the victim.

The victim was not injured and no weapons were involved.

Responding Newark Police officers located the suspect a short distance away and took him into custody without incident.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Stull, 48, of Philadelphia, was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Robbery Second Degree.  Stull appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $2,000 secured bail.  Stull was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
