On February 9, 2024, at about 2255 hours, Newark Police responded to Christina Parkway (SR 4), east of Elkton Road, for a report of a crash involving a fire truck. Responding officers arrived to find a single vehicle crash involving an Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company fire truck that had rolled onto its side and was perpendicular across the travel lanes of eastbound Christina Parkway.
An investigation at the scene determined that the truck, which was not responding to a call at the time, was traveling southbound on Elkton Road and turned onto eastbound Christina Parkway. As the truck turned onto Christina Parkway, it rolled over. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
At the time of the crash, the truck was occupied by four firefighters. All four firefighters were transported to an area hospital by ambulance with various injuries. Three of the occupants suffered minor injuries while one occupant suffered a serious injury.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control responded to the scene to assist with clean-up. The eastbound lanes of Christina Parkway were closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated and the vehicle was removed from the scene.
