Newark Man Charged with Third DUI/ Fail to Stop on Command/ Resisting Arrest

On January 8, 2026, at approximately 12:31 a.m., Newark Police officers responded to the unit block of Waterworks Lane for a report of a trespassing complaint. The caller reported a male subject walking around, looking into the residence’s windows.  The caller added that the subject was now seated inside a vehicle parked in front of a residence.

Officers made contact with Robert Davis, 37, of Newark, who was seated in the driver’s seat of the vehicle with the engine turned off. Davis spoke with officers for several minutes and seemed visibly impaired.   He told officers that he had walked to his vehicle from a restaurant and was at the wrong house.   He was asked whether he needed assistance getting home, and he declined. Davis stated that he would walk home, , and left the area on foot. Officers subsequently cleared the scene.

A short time later, one of the responding officers observed Davis operating the same vehicle on Kells Avenue. The officer attempted to conduct a car stop, but Davis failed to stop. When the vehicle finally came to a stop, the officer began to approach the car on foot, and Davis accelerated at a high rate of speed, fleeing the scene.

Davis continued to commit additional traffic violations while fleeing. Officers did not engage in a vehicle pursuit and instead responded to Davis’s residence. Davis was contacted there and taken into custody without incident.

Davis was transported to Newark Police Headquarters and charged with the following offenses:

  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol (3rd Offense)
  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (First Offense)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Aggressive Driving
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to Obey a Traffic Device (3 counts)
  • Unreasonable Speed
  • Failure to Signal When Turning or Moving a Vehicle

Davis appeared by video before Justice of the Peace Court #2 and was committed to custody in lieu of $4,705 secured bail. He was later released after posting bail.
