The Newark Police Department would like to remind the public of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. As the holidays begin, we generally see an uptick in the number of DUI incidents as people attend various holiday parties.
This weekend, in a 24-hour span, Newark Police arrested five drivers for DUI. Of the arrests, three resulted from crashes.
One crash on New London Avenue occurred when the driver drove the wrong-way on a one-way street, struck a parked car and overturned. The driver was not injured. Two other crashes involved property damage only.
One driver was stopped and charged with DUI and reckless driving after driving at a high rate of speed, about 100 mph, while also driving through an active construction zone.
As of early December, 2023, DUI arrests in Newark are up more than 16% over the same time period last year.
Driving Under the Influence is an easily preventable problem. Use a ride share service or call a sober friend.
Just one drink can begin to effect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle. When alcohol is combined with other impairing substances, including marijuana ,the effects on the body are multiplied. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
