UPDATE – Arrest Made – Police Investigate Multiple Thefts of Mopeds

Newark Police have charged Jack Gallagher, 28, of Wilmington, with four counts of Theft of a Motor Vehicle and one count of Conspiracy Second Degree.

Through investigation and witness statements, Newark Police Detectives were able to identify a vehicle used during the thefts.  Gallagher was identified as the owner of the vehicle and one of the suspects in this incident.  Newark Police also learned that the New Castle County Police were investigating similar thefts.  A warrant for Gallagher’s arrest was issued by Justice of the Peace Court #2 on August 14, 2020.

On August 16, 2020, Gallagher was located in the suspect vehicle by New Castle County Police.  He was taken into custody at that time.

Gallagher appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 and was ordered to be held in default of $10,000 secured bail. Gallagher was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Gallagher was also charged with additional theft and related crimes by New Castle County Police.

Robbery on South Chapel Street

On August 11, 2020, at about 2300 hours, a male victim was walking southbound on the sidewalk on South Chapel Street near East Delaware Avenue.  An unknown male suspect exited from a vehicle, grabbed the victim and pointed a handgun at the victim while ordering him to give him his property.  The victim surrendered personal property to the suspect.  The suspect then fled in the vehicle traveling eastbound on East Delaware Avenue.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20’s, 6 feet tall, 190 – 210 lbs and wearing a black shirt with white lettering.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark gray 4-door sedan with a light-colored license plate on both the front and rear of the vehicle.  Pictures of the suspect vehicle can be found below.

The victim was not injured during this incident.
