Newark Police Department Set to Unveil New Community Policing Mascot

The Newark Police Department and Newark PAL are thrilled to announce the official unveiling of its brand-new, professionally designed mascot.

This innovative mascot program marks a significant leap forward in community policing strategies, uniquely designed to bridge the gap between local youth and law enforcement. The Newark Police Department mascot is inspired by our patch and the eagle that is displayed on the shoulder of each NPD officer.   Our mascot stands apart as the first-of-its-kind in community policing nationwide, crafted at a professional sports-team caliber mascot company, Character Translations, the renowned creators of iconic mascots including “Gritty” of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The mascot program is entirely grant-funded, generously supported by an award to the Newark Police Athletic League (PAL) from the Delaware Criminal Justice Council, highlighting Delaware’s commitment to innovative community policing and youth engagement efforts.

We are excited to introduce this extraordinary character to our community. Our mascot represents not just the Newark Police Department, but a commitment to creating positive, lasting connections between our officers and the young people we serve.

Approximately 2000 elementary school students from local schools submitted their selection to help us name our newest officer.   A committee consisting of Newark Police officers and members of the Newark PAL Board of Directors, chose the winner a few days ago.

The name of the mascot and the winner that helped us pick the name will be announced at a school pep rally scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Downes Elementary School.  The winners and the mascot’s name will be revealed at this event.

Members of the media are invited to attend this exciting event.  Media members can RSVP and for further details regarding the mascot unveiling, please contact Lieutenant Gregory D’Elia, Public Information Officer, at 302-366-7100 x 3446 or at PolicePIO@newark.de.us

Join us as we make history, enhance community bonds, and introduce Newark to its newest ambassador for community policing!
