Newark Man Charged After Accidental Discharge of Firearm Into Neighbor’s Residence

On March 14, 2020, at about 2157 hours, Newark Police were called to a residence in the unit block of Caldwell Place for a report of a gunshot being fired.  Arriving officers contacted a resident on the street who reported that he had accidentally fired a shot from a firearm within his residence.

This resident, identified as Wiktor Kedzierzawski, 27, was taken into custody without incident.  An investigation revealed that Kedzierzawski was “dry firing” a handgun inside his residence, when he accidentally fired a round through a wall of the residence.  Officers found that the round had penetrated one piece of drywall of a common, adjoining wall, but did not penetrate through a second piece of drywall into the occupied, adjoining residence next door.  Contact was made with the owner of that residence and no one was injured.

The handgun involved was recovered at the scene.

Kedzierzawski was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Reckless Endangering First Degree and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.  Kedzierzawski appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $15,000 secured bail.  Kedzierzawski posted bail and was released.
